Users

To configure your ipbx Users navigate to System → Users on your ipbx administrator interface.
Users in ipbx can also be referred to as stations or full extensions. Users are a collection of configuration elements that usually consist of: a channel, a device and a mailbox. By creating a user you will always create a mailbox and optionally a channel and device. Users cannot functionally exist without a mailbox. Any mailbox associated to a user that is removed from the configuration will be automatically re-created if the user is edited. A user that has no channel/device associated is a fully functional user without a phone.
Be careful, removing a user will always remove any associated mailboxes, channels and devices. If you want to remove an user without removing the mailbox or channel, detach the mailbox and or channel from the user in advanced mode.

Extension/Mailbox
The extension/mailbox is the unique numeric identifier for the user of the extension. This information is also used as internal caller ID. Any extension added to ipbx will automatically become available as a valid extension.
It is recommended to use extension numbers starting with digits, 2,3,4,5 and 6. Depending on your organization's size extensions should be 3-5 digits long.
- 10-100 → Users 3 Digits
- 100-1000 → Users 4 Digits
- 1000+ Users or multinational operations → 5 Digits
If you want to create a user which has only a mailbox you would simply enter the extension (this is the same as the mailbox number) and name, plus e-mail address if you need voicemail to e-mail. Check the specific mailbox settings under System → Voicemail for details.
User Name
The user name is the name of the user in a full name format. e.g.: John Doe. This identifier is used for the mailbox, directory, internal contacts and caller ID name field. This field should be unique amongst users.
E-Mail Address
The e-mail address is the e-mail address used for voicemail-to-email forwarding and other notifications.
External Caller ID / DID
The external caller ID is used for any off-system calls. In all other cases the extension number is used as caller ID. The external caller ID does not apply to multi-site calling. If you check always use System Caller ID your ipbx system will override the outgoing caller ID with the System Caller ID. This can be used in cases where you want to use automatic DID/DDI matching, but still want to use the default caller ID.
Device Type
The device type is used for provisioning of the user's phone. Listed are all channel/device templates for SIP and IAX. If the appropriate module is configured, you can also use the Via Trunk to configure users as 'off-system' extensions. This is particularly useful for legacy PBX integration.
MAC Address
The MAC address is the unique identifier of the user's phone and needs always be entered if you want to use auto-provisioning. Unused DHCP leases will be listed in green, to enter an unlisted MAC address select other. Enter the MAC address without colons or dashes in upper or lower case.
Feature Settings
Feature Settings control additional features for the user. Only a subset of user settings are exposed in the administrator panel. Simply click on the 
icon to impersonate that user.
Advanced Mode
Advanced Mode allows you to create more than one SIP/IAX channel per user.
